Running from source works on Windows, macOS, and Linux. You need Node.js 20 or newer, npm 10 or newer, and Git.
Download the current LTS installer from nodejs.org and use the default options. npm is included with Node.js. Close and reopen your terminal after installation, then confirm both commands work:
node --version
npm --version
Open PowerShell, Terminal, or another command shell and run:
git clone https://github.com/memorylaneorg/memorylane.git
cd memorylane
npm install
npm run build
npm start
Open http://127.0.0.1:4280 in a browser, create the first administrator account, and add your photo folders. Keep the terminal window open while MemoryLane is running; press Ctrl+C in that window to stop it.
The command-line version stores its index, thumbnails, and generated data separately from your photo folders. Your original media stays in place.
